Parachuting postponed sine die

Tara: parachuting postponed sine die

Friday, the 30th of March, the Russian cargo plane chartered by Tara Expéditions from the Moscow company ATS was detained in Murmansk by the Russian authorities. The plane was supposed to parachute on Tara the fresh food supplies for the second wintering, wood, tents, a tractor and kerosene as well as the logistic means necessary to the April campaign of the European DAMOCLES scientific consortium.
The plane, of which the flight plan had nevertheless been accepted, had been authorized to leave Iaroslav so as to join the Tara Arctic base via Moscow and Mursmank. It had to return to its departure point Saturday the 31st of March with its load.

Since she has been caught in the ice seven months ago, the Tara ship has been drifting in a normal fashion across the Arctic Ice Sea. She has reached today the 86°N and 130°E. The team is in a good physical and moral state and the scientific mission is taking place as planned.

In September 2006, the scientific ship Tara had already been detained for one week in the Russian port of Tiksi. It is the second time that administrative reasons, peculiar to Russia, have disrupted considerably the scientific base operation and in particular in this present case of the changing of the teams.
At this time, the parachuting is postponed sine die.
