Tara in Brest from the 11th until the 17th of July

Tara in Brest from the 11th until the 17th of July

From the powerful three masts to the modest dinghies, sailboats for work or leisure purposes, all the boats that carry a story and that testify to the maritime traditions of France, Europe and the rest of the world are expected in Brest. This is why Tara will partake in Brest 2008.

On this occasion, a public screening of the 90 minute documentary « Tara, journey to the heart of the climate machine »* will take place on Sunday the 13th of July at 7h30 pm at the Chasse Marée. This showing will be followed by a debate with members of the Tara Expeditions team.

This movie filmed under extreme conditions, tells the daily life of this extraordinary mission. We discover how the crew members, prisoners of the ice, onboard Tara, fight incessantly against the cold, permanent night or day, the movements of ice sheets or the storms that destroy continuously the equipment that is also threatened by the bears who are driven to the heart of the Arctic because of the pack ice disappearance. But beyond this feat, this documentary shows us that the scientific mission has disclosed a reality that is much more alarming than anticipated for world climate…

Events are planned in the children’s village on the Tara Arctic expedition, workshops with scientific experiments are offered by Planète Science from Friday the 11th of July to Monday the 14th of July with three different modules.
Experiment module 1: melting of glaciers/melting of the pack ice
Experiment module 2: isolation of the boat Tara, survival of the crew. How did the crew manage to resist to extreme conditions?
Experiment module 3: types of energy used on Tara. What was the purpose of the wind generator, the solar panels used on the boat?
